How To Install VMware Server On A CentOS 5.0 Desktop This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions on how to install VMware Server on a CentOS 5.0 desktop system. With VMware Server you can create and run guest operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, etc. under a host operating system. This has the benefit that you can run multiple operating systems on the same hardware which saves a lot of money, and you can move virtual machines from one VMware Server to the next one (or to a system that has the VMware Player which is also free).

CentOS 5.2 without GUI,

VM-WARE  server 2.0.0-122956.i386

web admin  can log :  https://your.vm.ware.serverIP:8333/ui/

All is OK.  VM-WARE Server runs.

Thank,

I agree, VMware would have more ressourses available without the GUI. I believe it is a waste of ressources to have it installed.

Here is a way to install VMware 2.0.1 without the GUI on CentOS 5.3:

http://www.sertec.ca/EN-Howtos.html

Hopefully this will help.

If you get the error

Unable to get the access rights of source file „./vmware-vix/bin“. Execution aborted.

create a empty "bin" directory or a symbolic link in the directory vmware-vix.

I succeeded to install. I don't have any error message, but I can't find the icon to execute the program.

Can I type a command to execute it? or where can I find it?

I am very new in Linux and I don't understand your comments.

Where do I make an empty  'bin' directory? Could you give me full path?

Hey I had the same problem until I read the final part of the VMware Server 2.x where you now use the HTTP:8222. Point your browser to https://IP_ADDRESS_OF_VMWARESERVER:8222

it is pretty cool, beware that you need to have linux firefox to actually see the remote desktop of the machines.

I also had the same problem and managed to get it working like this: open a terminal and just give the command : "vmware". It will automatically open a firefox window loading the vmware internet console. For username and password i used root and my password for root.

Cheers

I don't have it in my system tools either and when I run vmware at the command prompt, firefox pops up and it is unable to connect.  It is trying to connect to https://127.0.0.1:8333/

I've tried a couple different ports with no luck as well as the assigned IP.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just install VMWare Server on CentOS, however to reduce operating needs I did a minimal install of CentOS (base packages plus a few I can't remember right now) and installed the RPM from VMware's website.  It installed super easy.  Just another option if you're good on the command line.
