Comments on Ubuntu 8.10 Samba Standalone Server With tdbsam Backend

This tutorial explains the installation of a Samba fileserver on Ubuntu 8.10 and how to configure it to share files over the SMB protocol as well as how to add users. Samba is configured as a standalone server, not as a domain controller. In the resulting setup, every user has his own home directory accessible via the SMB protocol and all users have a shared directory with read-/write access.

falko,

I've been waiting to see one of these written by you that includes domain logins. Are you just not interested in that realm or perhaps are you waiting for the new samba to finally be out?

I think there are plenty of users who would like to see a basic replacement for the old style domain controller (i.e. non-Active Directory)  on Ubuntu or any other *nix distro.

There's a really old walk thorough on here but it failed for me. I'm going to try to hack my way through it with an O'Reilly Samba book and see if I can add the article here using 8.04 LTS and samba with some sort of LDAP backend...
