Comments on Installing And Using OpenVZ On Ubuntu 8.10

Installing And Using OpenVZ On Ubuntu 8.10 In this HowTo I will describe how to prepare an Ubuntu 8.10 server for OpenVZ. With OpenVZ you can create multiple Virtual Private Servers (VPS) on the same hardware, similar to Xen and the Linux Vserver project. OpenVZ is the open-source branch of Virtuozzo, a commercial virtualization solution used by many providers that offer virtual servers. The OpenVZ kernel patch is licensed under the GPL license, and the user-level tools are under the QPL license.

It's likely the lenny part was removed as openvz (as well as vserver) is now in the main repository.

So if you are using debian lenny no external repo's required.

If you are using ubuntu 8.10, it may be possible to grab it from lenny and try it (I haven't tried this so no idea how well this will work).

I'm considering try this myself, I use 8.10 as my desktop but want to run a few virtual machines using openvz and having no repo for ubuntu is a pain.  Similarly using lenny is a pain as IMO and experience the desktop experience on ubuntu is less hassle than debian. (If I was just running a server, this would be a non-issue, I would have just used lenny).

Here's a way to install OpenVZ on Ubuntu 8.10 w/o using the lenny repository:

I patched sources.list according to manual and got.

Err http://download.openvz.org lenny/openvz Packages
  404 Not Found
W: Failed to fetch http://download.openvz.org/debian-systs/dists/lenny/openvz/binary-amd64/Packages.gz  404 Not Found

It looks ubuntu server 8.10 simply doesn't support openvz. If it's true, the manual is irrelevant. If Ubuntu 8.10 does support, the manual should be patched to reflect the true version of package.

Thanks

Chris

I noticed that this tutorial recommends to disable all of AppArmor. Unless you have a very specific need to do so, this is not recommended. The apparmor profiles shipped in Ubuntu are designed to work with the default installation. If a particular profile is causing you trouble, please disable the profile or put it in complain mode, and leave the other profiles that are not causing problems to do their jobs. Better yet, file a bug. :) See my blog entry athttp://penguindroppings.wordpress.com/2009/07/07/should-i-disable-apparmor/ for details.
