Comments on How To Upgrade Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) To 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

Hi there, nice HowTo as alway's :)

after i upgraded i faced a bit of a problem with X & my AMD/ATI 740G internal GFX upon reboot after upgrade X crashed & went to low graphics mode so i could use X to generate a new xorg.cont as now X does not need a config file to work, i followed the step's presented to me to generate a new xorg.conf but alas it was so basic it failed to work.

When i got to the text login (CTRL+F1) and cd'd to /etc/X11 i discovered the upgrade had deleted my original xorg (note to self make a backup to a usb stick before upgrading) so i searched the forums & was PM'd this via Ubuntu forums:

This is how to get an xorg.conf back;

sudo Xorg -configure

This creates a file, xorg.conf.new in ~/ (the home dir of the user).

Edit it to add whatever lines you need. [ED: the one it generated for me contained ALL available options for radeon hd drivers commented out with a #]

Then copy to the correct location:

sudo cp /path-to-user-home/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Reboot. [ED: at this point mine was working fine]

If it still doesn't seem to be using the new settings, run:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

and reboot.

The reason i posted this is because there still appears to be issue's with the radeon 2100HD chipset & in your error log's you may discover that the driver is failing to load due to a DRM failure & if you use the CGA socket the driver get's even more confused as it cannot determine what socket the monitor is actually connected to!! I did try FGLRX drivers from ATI/AMD website & created a custom .deb from the .run file as well as attempting installing the one within ubuntu repositories but BOTH failed telling me the driver would not be loaded as i was using third party ATI chipset & again it failed the DRM check!!!! good luck & I hope this helps you as much as it helped me.
