If we download Ubuntu Server from Caonical, the root account is disabled.  sudo is the expected method to elevate priviledges under all Ubuntu releases.  Or course, we can just

sudo -i

to get a root shell (with root's environment), but haven't that stated would be helpful, I suppose.  The idea that a root account can be directly accessed with a password goes against Ubuntu's philosophy.  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo
