Comments on Encrypt Your Data With EncFS (Ubuntu 13.04)

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs without any special permissions and uses the FUSE library and Linux kernel module to provide the filesystem interface. It is a pass-through filesystem, not an encrypted block device, which means it is created on top of an existing filesystem. This tutorial shows how you can use EncFS on Ubuntu 13.04 to encrypt your data.

EncFS should have the ability to generate a Fricosu key.  This would be a separate key created during initialization.  The key, when entered under duress in Colorado (or at a border) would cause the system to immediately, silently, and permanently forget the real decryption key.  Hope you have backups somewhere!

Could it be used maliciously?  Sure, but so can so many good, useful ideas.
