I'd really like to see gnome/kde/etc. add support for using animated gif images as desktop backgrounds. Having them rotate periodically through a collection of different images would be fun, too.

Desktop Nova deffinitely looks like a great application.  There is also program called NetPix, which has most of the same features plus webshots conversion and title and quotes depictions on the Background.  You can take a look at it at dotdeb.com

I like Desktop Nova, but I've also found cortina to be a good wallpaper switcher. I couldn't get desktop nova to work on linux mint debian edition, but cortina works great.

I have been using this for a while now. I really like the variety of changing wallpaper. BTW, it works with unity as long as you white list it so you can see the app in the notification area.

It does not work in Ubuntu 13.04 (Unity). It is a pity, but wallpapers automatically does not change.
