How To Install VMware Server 1.0.4 On Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) This tutorial provides step-by-step instructions about how to install the free VMware Server on an Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) system. With VMware Server you can create and run guest operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux, Windows, FreeBSD, etc. under a host operating system. This has the benefit that you can run multiple operating systems on the same hardware which saves a lot of money, and you can move virtual machines from one VMware Server to the next one (or to a system that has the VMware Player which is also free).

How come such a crap makes it's way on Howtoforge?!

"As of right now VMware Server won't compile correctly on Gutsy without patching the vmmon file"

1. You ain't compiling vmware server, you are installing it from a binary package.

2. Installed it w/o patching couple of days ago. Have I done smth wrong? No patching is needed for Gutsy.

3. It's far better to alien the .rpm and install from the .deb that comes out.

4. What about the web-frontend that comes with vmware server?

5. Etc.

This howto probably assumes that you installed a Gutsy desktop version. It seems the VMware installation needs the x-window system to install correctly so starting with only a server installation runs you into all sorts of problems.  This post from James Little got me on the right track again and solved all my problems.

You have to go to the Third Party Software tab and check the ubuntu gusty partner repository.

Update your repositories and then you can just check vmware-server and accept the additions.   You will get a pop up screen asking for your vmware serial, paste it in and you are good to go.

 Easy

This how-to would have been a lot more helpful if it had made it clear that it is for Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop, not Server. I spent ages working out why it wouldn't install on the Server version.
