Wow, that was a marathon. When I first encountered Bika, I went through a procedure for my first LIMS installation that looked a lot like this! I had hair back then, and I tore at it freely.
This howto remains valid for the rare case when we must work with old databases, but in the intervening years, we've been fixing. Bika LIMS has been updated to work with later Plone versions, beginning with Plone 4.0, and the installation procedure has been simplified, too: once Plone is working, installing the LIMS is done pretty much like any other Plone addon.
