The mrtg configuration file should be:
vi /etc/mrtg.cfg
not:
vi /etc/mrtg.conf

The site that hosts the DTC software has another setup guide on their site almost the same as this one, but with comments about fixing some of the problems that come up. Still haven't gotten this setup and working yet myself, but am getting there. Will be trying again using the guide below and see what happens.
