Set Up A Linux Playstation 3 Media Server (Ubuntu Hardy Heron) The Sony Play station 3 is a DLNA compatible device, DLNA is a framework where home electronics can share digital media and content seamlessly. This tutorial will provide instructions on setting up your Ubuntu hardy computer to share your video, music and photos, allowing you to play them through your DLNA compatible devices. Although several other open source media servers exist, i chose to use Fuppes due to its built in support for transcoding.

wierd i did not actually notice the X until you pointed it out.

fuppes is picking up the xbox but the xbox wont pick up fuppes

You need to enable that in the config.

Hello there,

Can anyone explain the reasoning in the 239.0.0.0/8 route. The server uses the eth0 interface as a broadcast address. Futhermore, all traffic is directed through that one interface. This static route is a Class D IP address, which leaves me more confused; because you only add routes if you are accessing another server in a different IP range together (ie 168.0.0.0/24).  Maybe there is a good reason , but not for me.

Love the tutorial, looks like a great tool that I would use regularly and it would allow my desktop to be freed of the job and instead running from my 24/7 server. However when attempting to install the package I recieve the error that its for 32 bit machines only, stupid of me to overlook but I was wondering if you have a AMD64 debian package for us 64 bit users.

By:

I too would be greatly interested in a 64 bit tutorial

By: Anonymous

+1

Make available a 64bit *.deb, or at least the source code so it can be compiled for am64 please.

By:

unfortunately i do not have a 64bit machine, i can provide the sources however if anyone is interested in building

By:

My server is 64-bit Ubuntu 8.04 (server version).  I'd be happy to build it, as I also ran into the 32-bit issue.

I assume it's possible to also share video with people outside my own network (over the internet) as long as I open the port - Is this correct?

Anyway, please let me know how I can get the source, and which packages I need to compile them..  or even better, why not release the source version also, so anyone can compile?  (Just an idea... I assume you have your reasons for not doing this..)

By:

Am not sure about being able to share across the net as DLNA uses multicast to locate resources, this multicast traffic could be dropped by your ISP's routers.

As per the source, fuppes is a GPLed project am not the author i just packaged an ubuntu package because there was none out there.

A howtoforge user offered to package the 64bit version i have not recieved feedback from him yet however i will make my build sources available for anyone to download and build for themselves. You can download them from http://www.topdog-software.com/oss/fuppes/source

By: pcawdron

The link to the source does not work... comes up with 403 Forbidden - you do not have permission.

Could somebody please, please, please compile for 64 bit unbuntu?

If the source is posted, I'll have a try, but I'm a complete novice :)

By: Anonymous

***, why not try before you die?

it compiles perfectly under 64bit without any problems. even on hardy and freebsd. it would be nice if the sources were 64 bit. but then again, you haven't even tried compiling it on 64 bit so how could you even write the 64 bit version??

this goes to you, and all posts before this one.

By:

I would be willing to build the 64 bit. I just installed a 32 bit next to the 64 bit and keep getting this error "[ERROR] failed to bind socket to : 192.168.2.1:56596" any help with that would be greatly appreciated.

By:

Seems like something is already bound to that port, send me a message on the forum and i will send you the build.

By:

Yeah I figured that myself so tried random ports and same issue.  It won't let me pm yet so this is the best I can do for now. I could post my yahoo e-mail as I'm use to all the junk e-mail in there.

hey, I had the same problem. I don't know if this is right, but i fixed it by right clicking on the wireless icon in the tray and then going to the connection information tab. Then I substituten my IP address (192.168.0.101) into the interface section. Then I restarted fuppes

By:

Works like a charm.
Had to fix some dependicies but that wasnt a problem.

Is there anyway to change the name being broadcasted?

i can't seem to get it to work; my PS3 gives the message "no servers were found". I could do with some help.

Firstly, I want to completely uninstall the failed attempt. What's the best way (I'm a ubuntu noob, so keep it simple!)? I've tried add and remove applications but can't see fuppes.

After that, could someone clarify a couple of things:

Does my box need to have a wlan, I'm using ethernet?

When changing the interface value in the config file, do I change to the ip address of my ubuntu machine (which is what I did)? Because after installation fuppes said 127.0.1.1.

started fuppes and pointed the browser to 192.168.1.7:port and added the folders. Status showed over 200 video files.

Multicast. How do I create the file? This is what I did:

i didn't have

/etc/network/if-up/fuppes

but i did have if-up.d . So first I used gksudo nautilus and created a document within if-up.d with the content you said. I changed the values to

#!/bin/bash
#
# in this case eth1 is my WLAN interface change to match yours
if [ "$IFACE" = "eth0" ]; then
ip ro add 192.168.1.7 dev eth0
        /etc/init.d/fuppes restart &>/dev/null
fi

my ip address and eth0

I then created a new folder if-up and repeated the above. I called both file fuppes.

End result, my PS3 can't see the server. What did I do wrong?

Thanks

By:

I have not tested on a non wireless network but am sure if your PS3 can get to the wired network then there should be no problem, the reason why u cannot see the server is because you do not have the multicast route setup you need the 239.0.0.0/8 route in the /etc/network/if-up/fuppes not 192.168.1.7

By: ich1

239.0.0.0/8 is the UPNP Multicast address  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upnp). This lets the PS3 or XbX or other system talk to the Linux file server. The server is using eth0 as a broadcast interface, not as an address. Check out that link, it helped me figure out what was going on as well.

if [ "$IFACE" = "eth1" ]; then ## If we're using interface eth1,
ip ro add 239.0.0.0/8 dev eth1 ## Add the multicast route,
/etc/init.d/fuppes restart &>/dev/null ## Then restart fuppes.

HTH.

You're awesome! Excellent job on the how-to.  I bought a ps3 last night.  I just looked up media servers for linux and found this and had all my media streaming on my ps3 in under 10 minutes.  Thanks a lot.

Please install the dependencies

By: Gunstick

or copy/paste the .deb URL into your browser (or click here) and an installer will open which handles the dependencies nicely.

By: Dae

excuse me, how do I install dependencies on a Debian Server?

By: Anonymous

Quite a few of the dependencies are currently not in the Debian Lenny repository. Therefor it is quite hard to install, compared to this guide.

By: Anonymous

I seem to be getting a similar error on intrepid.  I am able to install libimagemagick++10 and libsimage20, but other than that - not able to find these packages.  Am I missing something in my config?  I'm pretty sure that I have all of the repo sections enabled...

By: Gunstick

this tutorial misses some noob compatibility:

it is  /etc/network/if-up.d/fuppes NOT /etc/network/if-up/fuppes

these commands are needed:

chmod  755 /etc/network/if-up.d/fuppes

 /etc/init.d/networking restart

I built the package for hardy heron, so YMMV on intrepid, i am not going to maintain it for newer ubuntu editions as the developer now includes debian packaging in his source. I will only continue providing CENTOS rpms
