The shred program is of limited value on modern computers.  As the man pages for shred state, journaled filesystems keep some data which is used for most modern computers.  Also SSD drives often use wear leveling techniques where a different location is used to write the new data to extend the life of the drive, even if the OS is reported to that the same storage space is being used.  Other filesystems that may preserve data include RAID, NFS, Samba and other remote or layered systems.
