i can neither receive nor send emails but i don't get any errors.

    (using Mandrake on perfect setup.)

The nameserver used is 123-reg but the dns info is correct.

I have checked that the dns is correct using dnsstuff.com and got..

Trying to connect to all mailservers:

mail.tidy-hosting.com. - 84.244.2.100 [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 OK is our friend.]]

I have checked that all the mail servers are online which they are (though the DNS server will not go online - another problem) using the status link in the ISP control panel.

I have also checked for the file /var/log/mail/info which reads....

    Does anybody have any ideas?

Can you try to send an email from an email client and at the same time have a look at /var/log/mail/info and maybe post appropriate log entries here?
Are there also other log files in /var/log/mail? Maybe an error and a warnings log?

This is the extract from the file /var/log/mail/info after loging into UbemiMiau and then sending a message from another mail client.

The error log is empty and the warning log /var/log/mail/warning is as follows:

    Oct 17 14:33:27 tidy-hosting masqmail[28360]: process 28362 exited with 1

    Does this help.

What is masqmail? Don't you have Postfix installed?

  5. badben

    badben ISPConfig Developer ISPConfig Developer

    I thought so,

in fact yes, and it is running, i think. I have just typed..

    /etc/init.d/postfix restart

    and it did

    Shutting down postfix: [ok]
    Starting postfix: [ok]

However when I typed /etc/init.d/masqmail restart it did

    Shutting down Masqmail: [ok]
    Starting Masqmail: [ok]

Please tell me that I won't have to reinstall everything again.

I have also noticed that in the ispconfig web interface the setting say that:

MTA type: Choice of Postfix or Sendmail
    Virtuserfile: /etc/postfix/virtusertable
    Sendmail CW: /etc/postfix/local-host-names

I don't know if that helps.

Ok, you have masqmail running on the smtp port (25) instead of Postfix; Postfix is running on port 10026 instead.
Is this maybe some kind of spam filtering setup? (masqmail receives emails, forwards them to a spam filter that in turn pipes them into Postfix?)

However, Postfix has to run on port 25, otherwise your setup is not compatible with ISPConfig!

It's in /etc/postfix/master.cf. Don't forget to stop masqmail before (and remove the system startup links for masqmail).

Does your postfix main.cf contains the line:

    mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8

and in the smtpd_recipient_restrictions the part: permit_mynetworks

Oops. I have solved part of the problem with receiving emails.

I had the mailserver set as external mailserver in ISPConfig web settings for the site.

But I still can't send messages and I still get the same message in /etc/log/mail/info as before.

I so feel a bit of a prat though.

    Add this to your main.cf:

    mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8

and then restart your postfix server:

    /etc/init.d/postfix restart

Yet again you solved the problem.

You ISP Config guru's deserve some kind of nobel peace prize.

    Thanks again for your help.
