Most likely the update has overwritten some config files. To recraete them, run a ispconfig update:

    cd /tmp
    wget http://www.ispconfig.org/downloads/ISPConfig-3-stable.tar.gz
    tar xvfz ISPConfig-3-stable.tar.gz
    cd ispconfig3_install/install
    php -q update.php

and choose to reconfigure services during update.

clould this be from the old courier mail system used from 11.04:
    courier-authdaemon courier-authlib-mysql courier-pop courier-pop-ssl courier-imap courier-imap-ssl libsasl2-2 libsasl2-modules libsasl2-modules-sql sasl2-bin

I noticed that 12.04 how to only had
    postfix postfix-mysql postfix-doc mysql-client mysql-server openssl getmail4 rkhunter binutils dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-mysql dovecot-siev

I did read up on the migration from courier mail system. I think i did it right. I was able to logon via pop and imap and SquirrelMail. but no smtp logon or mail connections they all fail to deliver mail.

I've found that postfix, during updates/upgrades, has a NASTY habit of automatically overwriting main.cf and often master.cf as well. I back those files up before doing any upgrades.

Generally, if it happens to you, look in the directory. You should see a main.cf~ and a master.cf~ (if the thing overwrote) - those are usually copies of the original, working copies.
