    I'm newly in open source. Therefore,I would like to know that what is the difference between Ubuntu and Debian?. And which one is more stable and reliable? It would be kindly of you,if anyone can give me the answer and reason. And also if I want to install a new server, which one should be selected?

    Thank you in advance for the answer.

    Ubuntu is a nice Linux distribution and has excellent hardware recognision and it is based on the Debian unstable branche.
    For this reason the available software packages are more new, but probably not always stable.

    Debian stable (codename Sarge) is the most stable Linux distribution i know.
    It can be compared with the stability of freeBSD, which is a Unix distro.

    The disadvantage of using Debian is that you can not always make use of the latest software.

    So, if you are looking for a reliable Linux distribution, i would choose for Debian. And...Debian has one of the best package systems available!

    @Hans: To lower the gap between stable release and the possibility to have newer packages I would prefer CentOS (based on RHEL) and using the "extra" branch if it's needed.
    Even if there are packemaintainers like dotdeb etc. for debian I once had problems upgrading debian with aptitude due to unsolvable dependencies between the dotdeb stuff and the normal stuff.

    @Ben,
    That's good to know Ben, thanks!
    I did not mention anything about other distros, because Open4vee was asking about Ubuntu or Debian.
