Sub domain or separate domain?

Before I go wasting any more money on domain names, I need to ask which is better?

Should I be using a subdomain for my server? (server1.example.com)

    or

Would it be better to get the server it's own domain name? (server1.com)

I'm NOT going to be setting up my own hosting company.
I'm only using ISPConfig so I can host my own website and FTP while I'm on job-sites...

Normally you use subdomains for that.

OK, so No-IP currently has an asterisk for my subdomains.
Meaning, anything.mydomain.com would resolve to my IP.

If I go with their No-IP Plus service, I'm able to create as many as fifty subdomains and have total control over each of them.(DNS records, forwarding, etc).

If I leave things as they are, (with the asterisk), that means I can create the subdomains in ISPConfig for free, yes?
So, anything.mydomain.com would still resolve to my IP and ISPC would then handle translation of the subdomain into whichever webx_ folder it's supposed to, yes?

It shouldn't matter as long as the domain name itself is being pointed my IP address, right?

In short, I can save myself $80.00/year by doing things in ISPC?

Man, I'm so lost with the stuff right now...
