I am finding this in my apache2 error logs:

Failed loading /usr/local/lib/ioncube/ /usr/local/lib/ioncube/ cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

but I can't find the place where that is trying to load:

    h1550830:/# grep -R -i 'ioncube' /etc/php5/
    h1550830:/# grep -R -i 'ioncube' /etc/apache2/
where else could it originate? usually it gets loaded in php.ini right?

Do you have web sites that use its own php.ini?

    I'd also check .htaccess files.

    can't find it anywhere: grep -R -i 'ioncube' /var/www/

no problem, I'll ignore it for now.

You updated your php version from 5.2 to 5.3 as you updated the serevr to squeeze. You will have to reinstall ioncube now as the loader binary does not match the php version anymore.

correct. but I wasn't using ioncube. I had given it a try, a long tiem ago and then removed it. or so I thought. I don't want it.
so I am wondering where does it get called?
I don't want to have it runing I want to remove it :)

You can try this (but it might take a while and cause some load):
    cd /
    grep -R -i 'ioncube' *
