    Which distribution do you use?
On Debian, you can use apt-file to search the package that contains a certain file:

    Code:
    apt-get install apt-file
    apt-file update
    apt-file search mail

    problem is

with the search option I get > 200 options

    Run
    Code:
    apt-file search mail|more
    to browse through the results.
    You can also run
    Code:
    apt-file search /usr/bin/mail
as this is the full path to the mail program.
