How can I set up a local DNS entry so the site moves faster for those on the LAN? I want www.mysite.com to be for the world, but something like local.mysite.com to work for those in the office on the LAN.

I tried adding an A record for local.mysite.com pointing to the local IP but it does nothing.

This should work. Make sure that your dns server is used by the local clients to resolve dns records.

My local server that runs the DNS is, so I set my PC to use this as DNS and I get nothing, I can't even see google.com using that DNS.

If is a ISPConfig server then it is normal that you can not resolve external domains as mydns is a non resolving dns server. You will either have to install a separate resolver or configure your clients with more then one dns server.

If you want to test your dns server, use the dig command.
