    Appears to have postfix 2.6.6?
man page says postconf -M was added in postfix 2.9

Thats fine and all, I found a work around for that, but what is strange is now when I create a new mailbox via ISPConfig3.1 I shows in SQL but not in /var/vmail/domain I can now operate email as per normal for any mailbox that was already there, just can't add new ones. Am poking around in dovecot-sql.conf but don't think that is my target. Everything else looks like it is working so far though.

This means that the ispconfig server.sh cronjob is not running. See last chapter of this post for debug instructions:

Please advise /usr/lib/php/modules/imagick.so is present, "

" is content of line 209

    The file libMagickWand.so.2 is missing.

This code is fine, just your PHP is too old for this new style syntax. We added already a workaround in ispconfig some time ago, so I guess that you dont run the current git-stable version where this code looks already different.

This all started after trying to test 3.1 in hindsight I shouldn't fix what isn't broken but... curiosity killed the cat and all

Long story short, is there a way to just revert to 3.05 without a nuke and pave? 3.1 does not look like it will be a good fit for this machine.

When you installed the 3.1 update, did you answer 'yes' when it asked if it should make a backup of your current version? If so, you could just restore those files/database (look under /var/backup/).
