I would like to make a simple website wherein I want to have
password protected webpages....are there any readymade
free templates available or how I make them from the scratch.

Please guide me or put me in right direction.

Hi John I can help you out. There are various CMS like wordpress, joomla, drupal, etc... that can get the job done and you can manage all your content.

There is also password protected options with apache using .htaccess which I use webmin to manage.

I personnaly used joomla which is quite good. you have many plugins that add some functions, pre-made templates and many more.
This is quite simple to install, when you have a web server and mysql running, you get joomla files in your apache's document root folder and you go check the url ( par exemple).

Joomla has the ability to hide part of the site to non-registered users or to users that has no right on the content, you can hide entire pages or just a menu or an article.
I think that noixacl plugin will perform well doing sophisticated things with the rights.
