My ftp server is offline after the ISPConfig 3 installation. According to the installation manual, I correctly configured the neccessary files.

When I restart the ftp server by issueing this command /etc/init.d/openbsd-inetd restart i get this reply :-

On the ISPConfig service monitor, i see FTP-Server: Offline

Any idea on what might be wrong?

Pureftpd is running as standalone server and not trough inetd. If you want to start pureftpd, use its start script in /etc/init.d/

Never mind, i give up on this. I am going with OpenVZ with HyperVM and Lxadmin.

I will give up looking for free stuff. I come to a conclusion that nothing will beat paid software, even if it's DEAD CHEAP. I'd rather pay $10 / Month; than loose my time/effort and get angry and loose sleep over nothing.

I'm having the same problem. In the server monitor it shows FTP-SERVER OFFLINE. I've tried restarting pure-ftp from init.d but it still show offline.

Also, I"m running this on a debian4 VPS with openVZ, and at the bottom of the install I noticed:

    debian 4.0 under openvz:

I don't know what that means.

These commands have to be executed on the host system in case that pureftpd does not start. But it does not has to be a problem with starting when it shows offline. It might just be that your system has not correct setting for localhost in /etc/hosts and pureftpd is not listening on localhost.

And you think that anyone is able to help you with your problem if yo do not even provide the exact error messages that you got...

I've used alot of different "perfect" how-to's on howtoforge, and they always work .. if not i always noticed that i overlooked a step, forgot something that was described in the how-to...

The problem with this is, is that you get complete newbies to work with stuff like courier, postfix, authentication crap etc .. which actually should not have shell access, but 'just' an ispconfig login and let the system admin install ispconfig for them.

saves a lot of hassle ;-)
