after the suexec adventure I had, I returned to the default installation, and installed ispconfig 2.2.21 while I was at it. Now, during I had suexec active, I thought my problem with one of the sites only giving 403 errors, without regard if the files exist or not, would be linked directly to suexec. It wasn't.
The same site still gives only 403 errors, now with a default php configuration (there's not even a php file there yet, only the index.html). I set the apache log to debug, and get this in the sites error.log:

[Sun Mar 02 11:41:09 2008] [crit] [client] (13)Permission denied: /var/www/web8/.htaccess pcfg_openfile: unable to check htaccess file, ensure it is readable

But with the other sites I don't have a .htaccess in *that* directory level either...

    any ideas?
