    Hi everybody,
I have got a little problem with a mail address on my server.

I have got only one address on my server. My goal is to create several mail addresses but I am testing one before creating others.

My problem is I cannot connect to my mail address with Thunderbird. I can connect to the mail box with Roundcube. I can send an email from this address (from Roundcube) but, I can not receive any mail. I’ve tested from two different addresses. After several hours there is no mail received inside Roundcube, and, more strange, I did not receive any “error mail” in the mails boxes used to send to my test address hosted on my server.

I have read several threads about this kind of problems but I am really not sure what to do.

Since I am a newbie, I don’t really know if my problem come from sendmail, postfix, or my DNS.

Note: I have installed sendmail several weeks ago to enable the PHP function "mail()".

Can you help me to enable email sending and receiving from mail addresses hosted on ISPConfig?

I will post several informations in second part.

After reading more threads, i tested to send a mail from my testing address to that same address to see logs about this.

Now the mail is blocked in the "mail queue" and here are logs about the last events on my mail server.

    I may have a clue.
After spending a fair amount of time looking for clues and answers, it seems that "postfix" is not installed on my server.

    apt-cache policy postfix
    Code:
    postfix:
      Installé : (aucun)
      Candidat : 3.1.12-0+deb9u1
     Table de version :
         3.1.12-0+deb9u1 500
            500 http://debian.mirrors.ovh.net/debian stretch/main amd64 Packages
            100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

    apt-cache policy sendmail
    Code:
    sendmail:
      Installé : 8.15.2-8
      Candidat : 8.15.2-8
     Table de version :

Maybe this is a part of my problem?

I will wait for a response before doing anything wrong but I will continue to search for any clues. :)

On Debian system installing sendmail removes postfix. They can not be installed at the same time so the other is removed. Since ISPConfig expects postfix, you have thus broken your system.
Installing postfix removes sendmail, so you may get your system back with that and then forcing ispconfig to do reconfigure services.
On the other hand, you may have broken your system in additional ways, so fixing may be more complicated.

Sendmail is not required for that, the PHP mail() function works with postfix as well as Postfix provides a sendmail wrapper for that which is always installed. As @Taleman explained, installing sendmail destroys the mail setup, you can try to reinstall postfix, maybe it starts working again.

    Hi Taleman,
    Thank you for your response.

I was hoping this was a little problem which could be fixed easily.

My knowledge is really too weak ...

I will try what you say this afternoon.

    Thanks Till,
I reinstalled the mail server following your advice, skipping mysql config, and it seems to be much better.

In ISPConfig interface, Mail server is ONLINE.
Informations on https://mxtoolbox.com/ are much better.

    Code:
SMTP Reverse DNS Mismatch OK - xxx.xx.xx.xx resolves to myserver_fqdn.com
SMTP Valid Hostname OK - Reverse DNS is a valid Hostname
SMTP Banner Check OK - Reverse DNS matches SMTP Banner
SMTP TLS OK - Supports TLS.
SMTP Connection Time 1.125 seconds - Good on Connection time
SMTP Open Relay OK - Not an open relay.
SMTP Transaction Time 3.313 seconds - Good on Transaction Time
I will test the sending and receiving of emails from / to the address.

However, there is one thing that seems incorrect to me. Maybe you will confirm it is incorrect:

The status of postfix is "active (exited)". I think it is incorrect, right?

    service postfix status
    Code:
    ● postfix.service - Postfix Mail Transport Agent
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/postfix.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (exited) since Sun 2020-01-05 14:06:10 CET; 12min ago
     Main PID: 3440 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
       CGroup: /system.slice/postfix.service

Searching in the forum and site i found this message from Ahrasis about "/etc/ssl/private/dhparams.pem" and How to protect your Debian or Ubuntu Server against the Logjam attack.

Do I need to create "/etc/ssl/private/dhparams.pem" using this comand?

    Code:
    openssl dhparam -out /etc/ssl/private/dhparams.pem 1024

Yes, please create a dhparams file and restart postfix.

Thank you very much for your response Till. I think i found some clues about my problem.

Now I have to pick up a friend at the airport but I will try that when I get back.

After reading the tutorial How to protect your Debian or Ubuntu Server against the Logjam attack. I think maybe i need to do some steps detailed in the tutorial?

I found several things which are not correct (in my server) with this tutorial:

1- Generate a unique DH Group:
    I don't have "etc/ssl/private/dhparams.pem"

    2- Apache:
First, I have "SSLCipherSuite HIGH:!aNULL" in my file "/etc/apache2/mods-available/ssl.conf". This looks like if the configuration is missing.
Second, my Apache version is > 2.4.8 and OpenSSL > 1.0.2 but i don't have "SSLOpenSSLConfCmd DHParameters "/etc/ssl/private/dhparams.pem"

I have not yet checked if there are also things missing regarding dovecot and postfix but I think that all this is related?

The tutorial you refer to is quite old, just keep the setup that you currently have.

Sure, I will not do anything without your advice.

    Here it is:

    Generate the file and restart
    Code:
    [email protected]:/#openssl dhparam -out /etc/ssl/private/dhparams.pem 1024
Generating DH parameters, 1024 bit long safe prime, generator 2
This is going to take a long time
    ...................................................................+..............+.........................................+........+...+............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................+............................................+........................+..............................................................+.................................................+.....+.+............................................+...............+......................................+..............................................+......................................................++*++*++*++*++*
    [email protected]:/# /etc/init.d/postfix restart

After that, i check the mail.log:
    Code:
Jan 5 17:31:50 ns3009231 postfix/postfix-script[19725]: stopping the Postfix mail system
    Jan 5 17:31:50 ns3009231 postfix/master[3437]: terminating on signal 15

Seems as if parts of the postfix config are missing now. Please do a forced ISPConfig update by running these commands:

    Code:
    cd /tmp
    wget http://www.ispconfig.org/downloads/ISPConfig-3.1.15p2.tar.gz
    tar xvfz ISPConfig-3.1.15p2.tar.gz
    cd ispconfig3_install/install
    php -q update.php
and choose yes when the updater asks you if it shall reconfigure the services.

Thank you for your responses, Till.
I'm very sorry to disturb you so much because of my ignorance.

I did the update, and I also reboot my server.
Don't know if all is all right now. I will test sending/receiving.

    service postfix status
    Code:
Active: active (exited) since Sun 2020-01-05 19:36:50 CET; 53s ago
tail -100 /var/log/mail.log in attached file

    BUT
While I was writing this message, I received a mail in my mail box (hosted on the server) :).

Till, I don't want to bother you any longer tonight.
I will test quietly and I will tell you if everything is OK.

    Again, thank you very much.

    Hello,
after several testings, it seems that sending and receiving emails works correctly from Roundcube. :)
Thank you very much for your help, Till.

I just have a last question.

When i am trying to connect to my mail account (hosted on my ISPConfig server) with Thunderbird, i have got a warning message about the SSL certificate.

The SSL certificate for "imap.mydomail.tld" seems to be uncorrect. I tried to regenerate a new certificate (just in case) but it doesn't change anything.

The "Location" is automatically set to "imap.mydomain.tld:143".
When i click on "Get certificate", it say:
When i test the Location "imap.mydomain.tld", without ":143", it say:
In this case, if i click on "View", i see the certificate of an other site hosted on my site "the first site in alphabetical order". So it is wrong.

When i test the Location "imydomain.tld", without subdomain "imap" and without ":143", the certificate is valid.
