    I've tried everything I can think of and cannot log into squirel mail. I've checked the mail.err log and it is empty.
    Any attempt to log into squirrelmail results in a message telling me the username or password is incorrect.
    I am sure they are and have even changed the password and created a new user and still I recieve this error.

    I have the following in my mail.log:

    Aug 26 14:25:01 www1 postfix/smtpd[21729]: connect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1]

    None of these lines is from a auth attempt from squirrelmail. So either ou confgured squirrelmail to connect to a different server or you posted the wrong part of the log file.

    I know I followed the HOW TO perfect server for ubuntu 12.04. I also just ran the squirrelmail-configure script again and followed the tutorial. Next I opened the /var/log/mail.log file and emptied it. Then I opened Squirrelmail in the browser and tried logging in. The mail.log file is still empty and I cannot log in to squirrelmail. I am sure the squirrelmail confiuration was set for devecot as per the tutorial.

    This is a different machine than the one I had the ftp issue with. That machine is working perfectly now. But I need to get this one up and running and email is the only thing not working...

    I do not truly understand the way all the applications work together for email. I do understand that squirrelmail is simply a web front end for the underlying mail system. Dovecot is the actual application providing the mail system but it uses other applications for authentication right?

    So if Squirrelmail is not talking to Dovecot or the authentication agent, then is this a squirrelmail issue? Can I uninstall squirrelmail and reinstall it without messing up ISPConfig?

    No, the authentication is done by dovecot, there are no other applications involved.

    Check your squirrelmail config if the imap server is set to "localhost". then check the /etc/hosts file if there is a line for IP 127.0.0.1 in it for the domain "localhost". Then check with:

    netstat -tap

    if dovecot is listeing on all network interfaces (*) or at least "localhost" and your server hostname.

    Monotoba Member

    netstat -tap shows four entries for dovecot: pop3, imap2, pop3s, imaps and says listening for each entry.

    tcp 0 0 *:pop3 *:* LISTEN 1256/dovecot
    tcp 0 0 *:imap2 *:* LISTEN 1256/dovecot
    tcp6 0 0 [::]:imaps [::]:* LISTEN 1256/dovecot
    tcp6 0 0 [::]:pop3s [::]:* LISTEN 1256/dovecot

    This looks fine so far. And the squirrelmail installation is on the same server that also runs the imap server?

    Yes, all on the same machine.

    I installed mailutils and tried sending a message with mailx (I read on another site that an email must be sent to the account before you can log into it). It looks like the message was sent. Next I tried logging in to the users account using squirrelmail and got the following in the log file:

    Aug 27 18:23:35 www1 dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<CUT - EMAILADDRESS>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured

    Aug 27 18:25:01 www1 postfix/smtpd[30935]: disconnect from localhost.localdomain[127.0.0.1]
    Aug 27 18:25:01 www1 dovecot: pop3-login: Disconnected (no auth attempts): rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured
    Aug 27 18:25:02 www1 dovecot: imap-login: Aborted login (auth failed, 1 attempts): user=<[CUT- USERNAME]>, method=PLAIN, rip=127.0.0.1, lip=127.0.0.1, secured

    Note that I tried using the username only and also the complete email address including the domain. So it looks like I can now get to the login stage but authentication fails and I am sure I am using the proper password. I have changed it and tried again with the same results. But at least I am getting something in the log file....

    So where do I go from here to locate the actual cause of this issue?

    In the following portion of the mail.log I notice that the auth method is set to plain. Yet the email passwords in the database are encrypted. I'm not sure plain means clear text or not. But could this have anything to do with login failure?

    Plaintext authentication is the default authentication, it does not mean that passwords are stored in plaintext.

    Are you sure that you used the correct username for logging into squirrelmail? The username is the complete email address e.g. "[email protected]" and not just "user". Have you altered any dovecot config files manually or reinstalled dovecot after you installed ispconfig? If yes, then do a manual ispconfig update as described in the release notes and select to reconfigure services.

    Ok, after logging in via telnet I can authenticate and access the user imap account using plain text log in vie telent. However using openssl to login results in a connection refused error on port 993. Is this the correct port for imap ssl? If so, then what would cuase the connection to be refused? A firewall issue perhaps?

    EDIT: Perhaps I spoke too soon. I used the domain name on the first attempt with openssl. However, using localhost results in a screen full of info ending with:

    Compression: 1 (zlib compression)
    Start Time: 1346160708
    Timeout : 300 (sec)
    Verify return code: 18 (self signed certificate)
    ---
    * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 LITERAL+ SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE AUTH=PLAIN AUTH=LOGIN] Dovecot ready.

    I really need to figure this out but I have almost no experience here.... So if anyone can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

    Yes, I am sure. I have even tried both just the part before the @ and the whole email address. This was one of the first things I tried. Also, I can log into imap via openssl and telnet so if it were the wrong username or password this would not be the case.... I have also created multiple accounts and they all experience the same issue.

    I've been dealing with this for days now. Not much I haven't tried but I am no expert at this. So I've been reading squirrelmail, dovecot and postfix docs trying to figure this out. So far nothing has worked. But I have at least figured out it must be something to do with how squirrelmail is communicating to dovecot or the database... If I can log into imap via telnet and openssl but via squirrelmail then the issue must be squirrelmail or how it communicates with the imap services.

    Thought I had this solved!

    I thought I had this solved but I now have a different issue. I can log into all email accounts now using squirrelmail but only from localhost. I cannot login from any other domain on the server. I get the squirrelmail login page but authentication fails.

    Any ideas?

    Do you get any errors messages? Are there any errors in your mail log?

    I can reach the squirrel mail login page via webmail.<domainname>.com but cannot login. I get an error telling me that username or password is incorrect. Using the same username and password I can log into any hosted email account at the url <server-ip-address>/webmail, from another machine on the same network. I can also log in on the machine itself using localhost. But not using the domainnames. All dns records are setup correctly. As is evident by the fact I actually get to the login page.

    For a successful login the mail.log section is given below. However, for a failed attempt I do not see any aditional information in the mail.log file...

    Does webmail.<domainname>.com point to the correct server? Maybe it's a SquirrelMail instance on another server?
