Can I compile the 2.4.x kernel from kernel.org on ubuntu 5.10 with kernel 2.6.12?
Hi,folks
Can I compile the 2.4.x kernel from kernel.org on ubuntu 5.10 with 2.6.12 kernel?Is any more effort needed to compile successfully if I can do this way?
Any suggestion or information is greately appreciately.

Generally it is possible, but I guess you'll have lots of problems. Many of the options for kernel 2.6 don't exist for kernel 2.4, so you'll have to find out a working kernel configuration completely by yourself.

To have it very easy try the kernel script from SykHigh @ sysopforum.de
It is very easy to handle, supports the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel tree (just the select the actual release), detects hda & sda devices for settint up the bootloader (grub / lilo) after sucessfull compilation.
It is not a guarantee that it works fine afterwards, cause you have to configure the kernel, but it's reducing time.
