Default tar.gz?

I'm a total newbie so I'm sorry if this question is totally stupid...
What are files with the extension tar.gz, and what can I do with them?

Basically, a tar.gz is an archive (similar to zip files on Windows). You can unpack it by typing

Code:
tar xvfz /path/to/your/archive.tar.gz
