Default Setting up an Ubuntu Media Server

I'm hoping to set up an Ubuntu based media and file server for my home. My goal is to be able to have all my movies, pictures, and random files on the server and to be able to access them from Windows PC's, Xbox's, Android devices, and iOS devices. Ideally, I would be able to access it over the internet as well to function as my own personal cloud storage, but if I can only get it working locally, that'll get the job done.

This is my first attempt at setting up a server so I'm not 100% sure where to begin. I've read about a variety of approaches but am really not sure which, if any, can accomplish what I want. Any input in to how to get this all done would be great.
