Exclamation Can send mail but can't receive mail.

Ubuntu Server 12.04
ISPconfig3 v.3.0.5.2
Sqirrelmail

Hi,

I am able to send mail from within the webmail using an account created in ISPconfig 3 CP.
DNS is set up correctly (I hope) with A-record "mail" --> ispserverip and a MX-record as well..
I have inserted my mail-log beneath

Looking forward to hear from you

Kind Regards,
Dan

The log does not contain any connections from a external mailserver, so the problem can be:

1) The dns record is not corrcet.
2) Port 25 is not forwarded from router to the server IP if your server is installed in a local network.
3) Port 25 is blocked by a firewall on the server, a router or by your ISP.
4) Postfix is not listening on the external network interface.

Please post the output of:

netstat -tap

and

iptables -L

You have new mail in /var/mail/root
root@server1:/home/administrator#
There is one thing I think I need to inform you about. I get this "error" in "System > Server Config > Mail":

Please specify valid RBL hostnames."

Its just that in the manual we are told only to use RBL if:

Relayhost: If you want to relay outgoing mails through another mailserver (for example, because your
server is on a dynamic IP and therefore blacklisted)

This is not the case!?!

Looking forward to hear from you

Kind Regards,
Dan

Exclamation warning: hostname localhost does not resolve to address ::1: No address associated wi

Internet Service Information:
Internet Line/Used only for Internet-Servers.
Static/Fixed public IP
All ports opened in router --> "ispserverip"
Primary nameserver --> ns1.mynameserver.tld
Secondary nameserver --> ns2.somedanishdomainservice.tld

System Information:
Ubuntu Server 12.04 (upgraded - do-release-upgrade)
ISPconfig 3 v.3.0.5.2
Single Server Setup (running primary nameserver)
Tutorial: The Perfect Server - ISPConfig3 - Ubuntu Server 10.04
Downloaded Manual for ISPConfig3 by Falko Timme
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"warning: hostname localhost does not resolve to address ::1: No address associated with hostname":

This problem has been solved! I upgraded from Ubuntu Server 10.04 --> 12.04. In "/etc/hosts" some changed was made during this upgrade. Comment out these changes and the system will work again - I will insert the fix beneath so that other may benefit of this fix:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.200 server1.mydomain.dk server1

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts (Comment out!)
#::1 localhost ip6-localhost ip6-loopback (Comment out!)
#fe00::0 ip6-localnet (Comment out!)
#ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix (Comment out!)
#ff02::1 ip6-allnodes (Comment out!)
#ff02::2 ip6-allrouters (Comment out!)

But, still I'm not receiving mail from outside. I'm able to send mail from one client mailbox to another (on the same ispserver) - and from a client mailbox to an outside email such as gmail.com. In the mail-log I cant se the mailserver receive the mail or even try to handle the mail. I can't solve the problem, but I think it may be because of DNS problems! I will insert my DNS records for the domain beneath - maybe you can tell me what's wrong?
As a test I created the a "MX-Backup" which in some cases is the solution my ISP tell me! No change at all!:

(mydomaind.tld) mail.(mydomaind.tld) 10
(mydomaind.tld) backup-mx.post.tele.dk 20

DNS-records for my domain "mydomain.dk":

A mydomain.dk. 188.182.188.xx 0 3600
A mail 188.182.188.xx 0 3600
A ns1 188.182.188.xx 0 3600
A server1 188.182.188.xx 0 3600
A www 188.182.188.xx 0 3600
MX mydomain.dk. mail.mydomain.dk. 10 3600
MX mydomain.dk. backup-mx.post.tele.dk. 20 3600
NS mydomain.dk. ns1.mydomain.dk. 0 3600
NS mydomain.dk. ns2.gratisdns.dk. 0 3600

The content of: "/etc/postfix/main.cf"
root@server1:/home/administrator# vi /etc/postfix/main.cf
# See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version

stname = server1.mydomain.dk
"/etc/postfix/main.cf" 71L, 3373C

Content of "/etc/resolv.conf:

which I think looks funny. Nameservers, should be 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 or is this different here? Domain "home"?? Why, wasn't the hostname server1?

# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)

I can't find anymore to list - I'm completely lost. Had technical support from ISP almost 4 hours and the line is ok. Nameserver, Webserver, FTPserver, Database - everything works but the Mailserver.
Maybe a third re-installation of the ISPserver will make the mail work as well. Please, if you have any idea of what is wrong, please help me.

Kind Regards,
Dan

Then your problem is not on your ispconfig server and a reinstall will not help.

Either your dns record is not correct or you have a firewall or router in front of the server which blocks port 25 or the ISP which you use to connect the server with the internet blocks port 25.

Exclamation You are quite right!

Hi Till,

Thanks a lot! You were quite right! Today at 13.18 the filter/port 25 was removed permanent! They promised me an open port 25 when I ordered the line, but didn't do it properly! After some discussion they made the permanent change to the line

Thanks Till...

But, the mail worked for 5 minuts and the it stopped working again, and bounced the mail. But now I can see it arrive in the mail-log.. Will you take a look at this too please?:

I have posted a new post - it's a kind of "new problem" so this is the right thing to do I guess

PS! And many thanks to "MarkC" as well, who has been quite helpfull... Thanks you for that Mark..
