Default Plugin Mods, How to prevent mods being overwritten with updates?

Using 3.05 on Debian Wheezy x64

I had to make some changes to powerdns plugin to get it working properly. Is there a way to prevent subsequent updates/upgrades from overwriting my mods?

TIA........Bob

Default

Rename the plugin. If you customize a plugin, then this plugin has to be saved under a different name, then disable the original plugin and enable your customplugin instead.
