can't configure mail client for postfix server.

hi everyone,
Please help me out, i have tried everything to make it work but on luck.
I have been trying to configure my Thunderbird and Gmail as mail client for Postfix mail server, but its not working. In both case i am using ubuntu.
I have tried each and every thing that is possible,but nothing worked. i used to get error as :-
<b>Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password.</b>
i have double checked the username and password, nothing is wrong with them.
