Default problems after upgrade to 11.10
I upgraded Ubuntu from 10 to 11.10 (mistake)
I found and downgraded Saslauthd as per the instructions but
I get networking errors on startup
failtoban is not working and when I login to control panel I get (Debian Unknown) under system state?
Please advise what I can check to correct problems please.

Have you updated ispconfig after the ubuntu update? if not, I recommend to do that as next step.

Default upgrade
Would it be safe to use the upgrade method listed in the manual as I ran the upgrade BEFORE when ubuntu was 10.10.

You can use this upgrade method:

cd /tmp
wget http://www.ispconfig.org/downloads/ISPConfig-3-stable.tar.gz
tar xvfz ISPConfig-3-stable.tar.gz
cd ispconfig3_install/install
php -q update.php
