Default dns disables network connection

i setup a dns connection a while ago, im pretty sure incorrectly and now my server cannot connect to the network. i have my server connected directly to the internet on its own modem (so it doesn't affect my connection) inside my house.

is there any way to reset the dns settings so it can be reset back?

i might also add that when
Code:
/etc/init.d/networking restart
is ran the normal networking fails but ssh is restarted and runs fine so i can access the server through PuTTY
