Is your sytem updated?

Because

tells that your zlib / zlib-devel is too old.
So with debian (and this buntutrash) you should do
aptitude update && aptitude upgrade
on CentOS / Fedora try
yum update
an with Suse do anything with yast

On Debian sarge the latest one is 1.2.2-4
on the latest CentOS its 1.2.1.2
