So finally I was able to figure out the problem.
Here is what I did step by step in case anybody is interested.
chmod -R 755 /var/vmail
chown -R vmail:vmail /var/vmail
chmod 755 /usr/bin/maildrop
chown vmail:vmail /usr/bin/maildrop
Don't know how or why the permissions on the maildrop directory got messed up....
