Debian Squeeze login remote gdm fails

I've successfully connected to a remote Debian Squeeze box I built with Gnome, but I can only access the vnc server once someone locally has logged in as me. I have enabled the remote login feature in system > administration > login, but it doesn't seem to work, I have also done:

vi /etc/gdm/Init/Default

and added

/usr/lib/vino/vino-server

along with editing

/etc/gdm/gdm.conf

and changing

KillInitClients=false

but it doesn't seem to work in Squeeze.
