Xen Installation error: partition does not exist

We compiled xen-3.4.2 (2.6.18.8-xen).
The grub entry, and the partition information to boot from /dev/sda1 is as follows.


1. /boot/grub/menu.lst:

title Xen

kernel /boot/xen-3.4.gz console=vga

2. fdisk:

Disk /dev/sda: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes

When we boot the new Xen kernel, we get the messsage:
ALERT! /dev/disk/.......does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

We tried several other settings for "root=" in the menu.lst such as
root=/dev/sda1, etc.
But none of them worked. We kept getting the same error message "..... does not exist".

Can somebody figure out why does this happen? Thanks a lot in advance!

Which distribution do you use? What tutorial (URL) did you use to set up the system?

I use Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex). I just follow the README file and official Xen user tutorial from http://www.xen.org/support/documentation.html

Is it possibly a hardware (eg. hard drive) compatibility problem?
