Please don't laugh!!!!! as I feel rather stupid, but I have managed to change the ownership of everything in my server's home folder which includes all my ispconfig domains and ispconfig itself... doh.
What user and group does ispconfig run under so I can change it back? Also, what group do ispconfig users run under, i.e. user = web1_ernie group = ???
Thanks for any help! Must remember to not admin half-asleep in future....
Just had another thought... what user/group are the folders created by ispconfig in home/www assigned to, i.e. ftp, webalizer and sharedip... is it admispconfig?

Let's say you have /home/www/web1. If you have a site admin with the username web1_admin, then the owner of /home/www/web1 is web1_admin, the group is web1. If there's no site admin, the Apache user is the owner of /home/www/web1, but the group still is web1.
