Default php mail() with mod_chroot

I am not sure why the PHP developers haven't given us the option to route mail() through regular smtp methods, but here is my problem. I've installed mod_chroot and painstakingly went through and got everything working. However, I just noticed today, that php mail does not appear to be working. I've tried copying mini_sendmail to /chroot/usr/sbin/sendmail without luck
