The perfect server ubuntu jaunty, .example.com

Whilest following the Ubuntu server jaunty howto i stumbled upon this "In this tutorial I use the hostname server1.example.com"
Do i need to use the server1.example.com where it's asked or do i need to change it to something else? Ifso to what do I need to change it.

And what does it mean, can I change it to just anything that I want or does it have an certain purpose?

You can use whatever hostname you want, but it's best if this hostname exists in DNS. If you run your server at home, you can get a hostname from dyndns.org.
