Default DNS naming/setting up question.

I have a website hosted by an outside data warehouse and they handle the DNS records at this current time. I am setting up ISPConfig on a fedora 4 box by following "The Perfect Setup". I want the new server to handle email, dns, and ftp and for the site hosting to point to my other box in a data warehouse since I have sites that run asp.net.

My question is what do I name the new box? I was going to name it mail.mycompany.com but it will be handling the DNS to so should it be called ns1.mycompany.com or what. And after that how do I get it listed as a TLD so I can pull my domain name account up under godaddy and point to my new DNS box?

Thanks for any help.

You can point as many FQDNs to your system as you want, e.g. mail.mycompany.com, ns1.mycompany.com, ftp.mycompany.com, etc.

Hi Falko,

I have a DMZ which is nated and my DNS resides on this, then I have internal network which is managed by MS active director and dns (also nated)
Now: Iam tring to place ISPconfig in the interal network and I have enough Internet IP address to map to my ispconfig box.

in terms of the DNS configuration what do I need to do to make this work?
do I put these IP address in my MD dns and DMZ DNS. My question is how to add WWW and MX record with DNS address. It ried to get configuration after installation doc from CoDonCo, and cant login to his FTP site

thanks, xian

If you want to use the ISPConfig system as the name server for your domains, you must first make it authoritative for your domains (by telling the registry).

Have a look here: http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/sho...92&postcount=4

BTW, I hope you have a static public IP address. If your public IP address changes frequently, it's a very bad idea to run a DNS server in your local network.
