Tomcat onto ubuntu Perfiect Server

I am instlling Tomcat onto my Ubuntu Perfect Server installation. I have downloaded the 6.0 jdk and moved it to /usr/lib as instructed in http://www.howtoforge.com/apache2_tomcat5_mod_jk When I enter "which java" it is not found. I would assume that this would need to be placed in a path statement somewhere. But that is not in the documenttion.

I have logged out and back in, also rebooted. JAVA_HOME is set properly.

What did I miss?
