How to switch to the English keyboard layout in vmware workstation?

Recently i downloaded an vmware image from the howtoforge web page (which is a great service by the way).
After overcoming the initial step stone of figuring out the root password (which was quite self explanatory) i have to face the second obstacle.
Obviously the VM uses a German keyboard layout. Nothing wrong with it, a German native myself I'm more comfortable with the English keyboard layout.
Is there a way to switch to the English keyboard layout in my vmware workstation?
At least i would appreciate it if somebody tells me where these damn / (slash) is, a desperately look for it a quite a while now!

problem solved, I found that damn / (slash) hidden in a secret corner of my keyboard, conected remotely via ssh using (putty) and now it works fine!

That's the preferred way as that makes you independent from the server keymap.
