Question looking for ldap primer beyond the basics

i've got ldap server running on Fedora with the root and ldapuser users.
But, can not find instructions on how to

* get all of my users into the ldap database in one swoop

* provide useful information like email address, phone numbers and real names.

i'm pretty confused about the working of ldap, so don't really understand what I don't even know.
I have the following schemas installed:
core, cosine,inetorgperson,nis
