Default Question about load balancer hardware

I was checking out the How to on high availability load balanced apache cluster Here and was wondering what the load balancer hardware spec would be. Does this LB machine need to be a high performance server or could you use an older pc with medicore processor and smallish HD to get that done efficiently?

We're running our load balancers in two Xen VMs with 256MB of RAM each, and the load hardly reaches 0.1, so I think old hardware should do.
