How to install OpenOficeOrg 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

I have the 64 AMD version of Ubuntu 8.04 and have been trying to install OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 alongside the 2.4.0 one already installed. I have followed the instructions posted by Falko Timme and can only get as far as:

... and go to the directory that contains all the .deb packages...

cd OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/

the one I get does not have the /DEBS/ at the end. I can only assume therefore that these instructions are not for the Linux 64 Deb platform.

Can anyone help with installation instructions for this platform?

Hi Falko,
I did as you suggested and got as far as getting an icon on my Desktop with the words 000300_m9_native_packed_1_en-US.9358 but when I then tried to install with the command
in Terminal as per your instructions I get the message Command not found. You will note that the words above do not have cd in front or /DEBS/ at the end. However I do have an OpenOffice 3.0.0 Writer icon on my desktop for the first time and in Office in Applications.
When I tried to open it I get an error message which states:
Details: Failed to execute child process "/home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz" (Permission denied)

Any further help would be appreciated.

Uncompress the file like this:

tar xvfz /home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz

Then install it as shown in the tutorial.

Yes its me again, I uncompressed the file as suggested by typing in:tar xvfz /home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz and got a page full of directories including: OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/ I then typed in
sudo dpkg -i *.deb and got a message - command not found. Very frustrating as I am sure I must be very close to success. I have to admit I am an absolute newcomer to Ubuntu so perhaps it is may fault in that I am not doing something right. In your instructions you
state then go to the directory mentioned above and install them with one single command which I did, I think that I am not doing that last stage correctly. Help!!!

Thanks for your latest post. Right from the start I have tried to follow your original posts on the installation of OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04. All my computer experience is with Windows and Ubuntu is something very different for me. In your previous email you suggested how I should uncompress the file by using:tar xvfz /home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz This I did by typing this into Terminal and a whole list of directories appeared one of which was: OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/ After uncompressing the file you stated: Then install it as shown in the tutorial. In the tutorial it states: and go to the directory that contains all the .deb packages: cd OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/ which I did except the one I had did not have cd at the front. I typed this into Terminal and as instructed in the tutorial I tried to install them by typing in the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb and got the message: command not found. I suspect that I have not done this last stage correctly and that is entirely due to my inexperience with Ubuntu as I am on an entirely new learning curve. I note that at the bottom of page 7 of your tutorial you have a section on Creating a Launcher if one wishes to run Ubuntu's OpenOffice package and OpenOffice 3.0.0 in parallel. This is what I want to do so does this have any bearing on the problem?

I still stand by my original question... you say you are new to Linux/Ubuntu yet you want to just go ahead and operate like on windows - which is go to a website, download software, install it...

IMHO you should first get a bit confortable on how to use linux and especially also package management within ubuntu - this even more if there are not any features really needed from a version not in the according package manager.

cd is short for "change directory" - it's a command, not part of a directory name.
Can you post the output of

ls -la /home/ernest/Desktop

?
