Default How to turn off Laptop Monitor running Hardy 8.04 Server edition?

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Server Edition for x386) in my laptop DELL 6000. I use Putty to access it from another machine.
But the monitor is always ON.. Since I am using SSH to work with it, I just wanna turn the monitor OFF. I googled around.. but did not find anything that I could understand

Please help me.. how can I turn the monitor off of my laptop server ?

thanks in advance!

Does anyone have any information on this? I'm running CentOS 5.2 on a Dell C600 laptop and want to be able to turn the monitor off when I either close the lid or leave the laptop idle for x minutes.
