Unhappy Help with Xterm from a Vista Machine to Fedora 9 machine

Ok here is my error:

xterm Xt error: Can't open display:
xterm: DISPLAY is not set

I have looked through many threads and tried many things but i cannot get xterm to work. I am on a windows vista machine ssh'ing to my fedora 9 box. I can ssh fine but the xterm wont open. I am doing this all while logged into the fedora 9 box directly as a standard user and i am trying to xterm as a standard user also. I tried setting DISPLAY=:0.0 and still same errror but i guess it may be because my desktop is using display 0.0 maybee i have to set it equal to another number. im new at this so i really dont kow but help would be appreciated.
