Default Slow remote mysql connection

Hi,

I have a problem with remote connections to my database.

When I connect from a domain on the same server the speed is excellent but if the site using the database is remote the page takes upto 20 seconds to load.

I have tried to add

skip-name-resolve

to the file

/etc/mysql/my.cnf

then

/etc/init.d/mysql restart

but it dosent help ;-(

any ideas?
