Exclamation web-ftp .htaccess tool.

I have tried to use the tool I located in the web-ftp if you login to web-ftp from the admin site you can click on a folder and there is an option to protect the folder. I have done this with the path /dump i added that path from the drop down and added a user but when I try to access the main site the whole site gets password how do I use this tool to pasword protect just a folder and what should i look for it its not setup right. I know how to do .htaccess files on my own but this is much faster please advise thanks in advance.
